One noble lady employed over 1,200 gardeners and planted 8,000 daffodils in just ONE season! An enterprising princess/ royal duchess utilized her acquired immunity to smallpox to become a clandestine messenger for an exiled king trying to regain his throne.
This presentation looks at female power exercised indirectly, but no less powerfully, from a unique position: behind the throne. Mistresses of French and English monarchs often were privy to much of the private, political goings on of the day - come learn how they actively participated in the complex political life at court and how they created their own social circles of influence in an attempt to hold the king's attention and stay in power as the current royal favorite ("maitresse en titre").
About the speaker: Melinda Wallington has a lifelong obsession with women's history, an extensive background in history, women's studies, and anthropology, and 10 years of archival experience in U of R Department of Rare Books and Special Collections, before bringing her love of history to GPL.
