Francis Perkins: Breaking a Barrier

Francis Perkins (1880-1965) led a long life of service. First working in Chicago at Jane Addams' Hull House, Perkins was inspired to become an activist after witnessing the Triangle Factory Fire tragedy in 1911 which killed 146 workers and sought to improve fire safety regulations.

Frances Perkins worked in NY State government under Governors Al Smith and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. When Roosevelt became President in 1933, he invited Perkins to join his President's Cabinet in Washington, D.C. During her term as the first woman to serve in a President's Cabinet, she participated in the creation of the Social Security Act, as well as other government efforts of the New Deal.

About the speaker: Mark Sample has been a professor of history at Monroe Community College since 2004. He received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in history from SUNY Brockport.
