How do we research TV that was broadcast live? Can we figure out who all decided what went on the air?

Lauren Berlin is an Eastman PhD candidate in musicology who offers a guided tour of her research about mid-century TV variety shows. While people may remember the greatest hits like the "Ed Sullivan Show" or the "Carol Burnett Show", Lauren explores the flops and peripheries of TV programming, and how shockingly difficult it is to do research about them. Through a foray into the early TV trade press, kinescopes, and historical newspapers, Lauren investigates how quickly we can lose even things that seem familiar.
